Bates College Swim Camp (BCSC)

A Note From Coach Casares:

The sport of swimming and diving has been a passion of mine ever since I can remember. Having a chance to run several swim camps at Bates College is one of the most exciting opportunities I have encountered. Our philosophy will simply be to offer outstanding coaching by a motivated and energetic staff whose sole mission is to take every step possible to stimulate your love for the sport. Simply put, we want to better your strokes, sharpen your attitude, and focus your goals so you can reach your absolute potential!

More specifically though, the Bates Swim Camp will offer both a training and technique aspect - in an environment that is both positive and healthy. For our younger camper, we mix technique and fun together so each child has a blast while learning more about the sport. Counselors and coaches will not only lead campers through technique sessions, but also organize games, talent shows, and other fun activities.

For the older more experienced camper, this will be an opportunity to learn about technique, but also experience many of the best training philosophies. The last thing you want to do is "get out of shape" at swim camp, so we will train you hard while making sure you have a good time. Movie nights, pizza parties, and capture the flag are just as important as starts, turns, and stroke technique.

Download the brochure and read it over, or fill out the new online application form (see "information" to your right). If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

HEAD COACHES

ABBY BRETHAUER - UPDATE!! HEAD COACH Mary Washington
Brethauer, who has been serving as an assistant coach at Columbia University since 2004, brings a wealth of competition and coaching experience to the position. In the past five years at Columbia, she worked extensively with sprinters, with that group achieving great success. She also played a key hand in recruiting and administration of the program in and out of the water. She began her college coaching career for one season as an assistant at Hamilton College. Brethauer has also coached extensively at swim camps at Bates College, Carthage College, and Hamilton College.

Prior to her coaching career, Brethauer was a 12-time All-American and three-time team national champion at Kenyon College. A team captain for the Ladies in 2002, Brethauer is a former NCAA Division III national record holder, and has been a USS competitor at the age group, senior, and national levels.

FERNANDO RODRIGUEZ - WILLIAM AND MARY SWIMMING
• Click on his name for a bio!

CLAY MILES - KINGSWOOD OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL, CT
• Simply put, Clay was born to coach swimming. A natural teacher, the kids love him, his peers respect him, and he always finds a way to make his athletes better, and his teams successful. He is one of the winningest coaches in all of New England, and surely one of the best instructors in the country.

KATA FRANCZYK - KINGSWOOD OXFORD / CONNECTICUT COLLEGE
• Kata is one of the most sought after camp coaches in the country. A natural leader and tremendous athlete, Kata has parlayed her swimming successes at Conn into a tremendous career as a High School teacher and coach. Her students respect her knowledge and crave her enthusiasm. We are lucky to have Kata join us each year to pass on her knowledge and love for the sport.

BILL WALLACE - ST. ANDREWS SCHOOL, DE
• Coach Wallace is both an artist and scientist. Just last year he was explaining to me the science behind his warm-up routine and training - and then followed that up with how a few inspiring passages from a good book can bring a team together. I knew immediately I was spending time with a true renaissance man! We are very lucky to have Bill joining us this year, and the coaching staff is looking forward to working alongside him and learning something too! College Recruiting?

Being in the college recruiting game for the last decade I have noticed some common successes and errors when it comes to high school swimmers finding the right program to continue their swimming career. In fact, several college and high school coaches were quick to agree with me which has led to the "College Recruiting Series" at our camp.

We will discuss the recruiting process in detail and help alleviate the pressures of swimming fast AND picking the right college to all campers interested, 15 years and older. Opportunities to excel in the sport of swimming exist at every level, and there is a smart choice for everyone. These lectures should prove to be an excellent beginning to every swimmer’s quest to find the best college for them!

Lectures include (Session I & II only)
• Guidelines on picking the right college.
• Creating a swimming resume and recruiting plan.
• Academic Interests and College Majors.
• What College Coaches want from recruits.
