ABBY BRETHAUER - HEAD COACH MARY WASHINGTON (All 3 Weeks!)
• Brethauer brings a wealth of competition and coaching experience to the Bates College Swim Camp. She served as an assistant coach at Columbia University for the past six years and worked extensively with the sprint group. While at Columbia her team rewrote the record book and she continually attracted some of the best swimmers in the nation to the one of the most academically prestigious institutions in the country.
Not to be outdone by her past successes, Coach Abby experienced immediate success as the new Head Coach at Mary Washington University. She led the Eagles to two conference championships (Men and Women), was named Coach of the Year, and is sending her team to NCAA's!
Prior to her coaching career, Brethauer was a 12-time All-American and three-time team national champion at Kenyon College. A team captain for the Ladies in 2002, Brethauer is a former NCAA Division III national record holder, and has been a USS competitor at the age group, senior, and national levels.

JOHN YOUNG - DAVIDSON COLLEGE
• John has a tremendous mix of experience and success at every level of collegiate swimming. As a swimmer, John was a national level freestyler and butterflyer at Williams College. In fact he was a four time National Champion in the sprint freestyle events - and in his senior year was voted the NESCAC swimmer of the meet! From there Coach Young went on to energize the Kenyon Men's swimming team with both a passion for coaching and an amazing ability to recruit in stellar athletes with tons of potential. Kenyon Swimming continued to win national titles and distance itself from others while John was on their staff. In 2005 Coach Young left to head up his own team at the academically prestigious, Division I, Davidson College. In four short years John has transformed the team into one of the nations elite - and most up and coming programs. He has been voted coach of the year several times, led his team to numerous conference championships, and even headed to the big dance; Division I nationals! Bottom line, there is nothing John hasn't made better, or succeeded at... and we extremely excited to have him on staff.
BRAD BURNHAM - BOWDOIN COLLEGE
• Coach Burnham arrived at Bowdoin in 2000 after being involved in all aspects of the UCLA swimming program for six years. While at UCLA Burnham coached his team to 16th or better at the NCAA championships each year - and played a role in over 40 Division I All-American performances. He parlayed his experiences at the highest level into undeniable success at Bowdoin. Not only has his team attacked the record book under his tutelage, but he has produced NESCAC champions and All-Americans as the leader of the Polar Bears. Also, Coach Brad thinks outside the box and is fairly obsessed with technique - and the simple of question of how to swim faster and more efficiently. His quest to understand how humans can better relate to water and "train to race" - instead of train to train - is exactly what has led to many so many of his great ideas and success stories. We are thrilled to have him on board.

FERNANDO RODRIGUEZ - WILLIAM AND MARY
• Rodriguez comes to Bates with six years of coaching experience, most recently as an assistant coach at William and Mary. Prior to W&M he was a senior coach and head master’s coach with the Athens Bulldogs Swim Club in Athens, Georgia. He was also an assistant coach at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana during the 2004-05 season.
Rodriguez graduated from Kenyon College in 2004 with a degree in anthropology. He recently obtained his master’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Georgia. As a student-athlete at Kenyon, Rodriguez was a seven-time NCAA All-American and a four-time All-NCAC honoree. He was also part of four NCAA D-III national championship teams. MIKE RAWLEIGH - GETTYBURG COLLEGE
• Being a Gettysburg alum and having swam for Coach Rawleigh I couldn't be more excited to have him join our staff this year. A great majority of our camp was "borrowed" from the very successful Gettysburg College Camps that I worked at under Coach Rawleigh!
To say Coach has been successful is an understatement. His teams have won 32 conference titles in his 25 years of coaching. At the national level his program has finished as high as 7th (Women) and 12th (Men) - and he has coached a two time NCAA Champion and National Record holder. He's in the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for coaching, and a "Master Coach" according to the College Swim Coaches Association. Prior to Gettysburg, Coach Rawleigh walked the deck as Sprint Coach for the UNC Tar Heels.

• Kata is one of the most sought after camp coaches in the country. A natural leader and tremendous athlete, Kata has parlayed her swimming successes at Conn into a tremendous career as a High School teacher and coach. Her students respect her knowledge and crave her enthusiasm. We are lucky to have Kata join us each year to pass on her knowledge and love for the sport.
JACOB SHANLEY - BATES COLLEGE SWIMMING
• Coach Shanley joined the Bates College swim staff in 2010 and has made an immediate impact on the program. Working primarily with breaststrokers, backstrokers, and IM'ers, Jake immediately had the knack for communicating the essential aspects of correct training and technique - along with being a tremendous motivator. A 2010 graduate from Kenyon College, Jake is an Old Town Maine native, and a 6 time All-American in the backstroke and breaststroke. His coaching career began on deck alongside me working camps, and we have been thrilled to have Jake be a part of the Bates program since 2008. Bringing back one of Maine's best swimmers to work at Bates is a fantastic connection, and smart move.
• Coach Wallace is both an artist and scientist. Just last year he was explaining to me the science behind his warm-up routine and training - and then followed that up with how a few inspiring passages from a good book can bring a team together. I knew immediately I was spending time with a true renaissance man! We are very lucky to have Bill joining us this year, and the coaching staff is looking forward to working alongside him and learning something too! (click on his name to be linked to his program's description!)
COUNSELORS
• TBD - There will be Conference Championship Finalists, ALL-Conference Swimmers, and several All-Americans! Our staff will allow us to provide 1:6 staff to camper ratio this year!
